Academic Advising

Working with the regional and global Salem State community, academic advising’s mission is to provide the foundation for informed academic decision-making by educating, advocating, encouraging, assisting, and empowering a diverse undergraduate student population, as it relates to successful academic outcomes.

Academic advising is the foundation upon which a student develops his or her academic program. Through academic advising, students identify and explore the educational opportunities available at Salem State. Meeting regularly with an advisor, students plan their programs, complete degree requirements and benefit from a mentor/mentee relationship with a member of the faculty or the academic advising center professional staff.

Advisor Assignments

If you are a day student, you'll be assigned a faculty advisor in your major. If you have an undeclared major, you'll be assigned a faculty advisor through the interdisciplinary studies department. Day students should make an appointment with their faculty advisors whenever it seems necessary, but at least twice a semester. One of these appointments should be just prior to upcoming registration periods.

Evening students should meet with a professional advisor in the Center for Academic Advising whenever necessary, but at least upon the completion of each 15 credits towards your degree. If you have any questions, please call 978.542.7049 to speak to an advisor or email Academic Advising to make an appointment.
